He first came to the attention of critics and public in 1967, when he was unanimously awarded first place by the prestigious jury of the “Guido Cantelli” competition for conductors in Milan. The following year he was appointed principal conductor of the “Maggio Musicale Fiorentino,” a position he maintained until 1980. In 1971 Muti was invited by Herbert von Karajan to conduct at the Salzburg Festival, the first of many occasions, which led in 2001 to a celebration of thirty years of artistic collaboration with this glorious festival. In January 2006, he was appointed artistic director of Salzburg’s Pentecost Festival. During the 1970s, he was the London Philharmonic’s chief conductor (1972 to 1982) succeeding Otto Klemperer. From 1980 to 1992, he inherited the position of Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra from Eugene Ormandy.

On je prvo privukao paznju kriticara,i javnosti u 1967, kada mu je ziri jednoglasno
dodelio prvo mesto na takmicenju dirigenata “Guido Cantelli" u Milanu.Sledece godine je imenovan za glavnog dirigenta u “Maggio Musicale Fiorentino,”

Vaxter hvala na ovome linku,moze mi pomoci ali kod mene je problem taj sto i kad prevedem,razumijem nesto ali ono drugo bude zamrseno i ne znam otpetljati tako da se bojim da cu nesto pogresno ispraviti a to mi se ne bi smjelo dogoditi.

Od 1986. do 2005. bio je muzicki direktor "Teatro alla Scalle" i pod njegovom upravom su bili poduzeti vazni projekti kao Mozzart Da Ponte trilogija i ciklus Wagner Ring. Osim klasicnog repertoara, donio je na scenu i manje izvodjena i zanemarana djela. U njih spadaju izvrsni komadi napuljske skole iz 18. stoljeca, kao i opere koje su napisali: Gluck, Cherubini, Spontini i u novije vrijeme i Poulenc, kompozitor “Les dialogues des Carmélites.” Za ovu produkciju Muti je dobio prestiznu "Abiati" nagradu od kriticara. Dugi period koji je proveo kao muzicki producent La Scala organizacije kulminirala je 7.12.2004. u trijumfalnom ponovnom otvaranju obnovljene La Scale s Antonio Salierievim “Europa riconosciuta,” koja je bila odredjena za prvo La Scalino otvaranje 1778.
